Apparently someone was repeatedly stealing campaign signs from a SLC resident’s front yard. The resident got so frustrated that he strung bells to the sign and slept in his living room, fully clothed, so he could catch the culprit. His strategy worked and he nabbed himself a 52-year-old Heintz who said that he had “been involved in a ’strange incident’ and didn’t know why he did it.”

The controversy of Moroni’s coffee habit

A local coffee shop in Utah created a hit t-shirt depicting coffee flowing into the Angel Moroni’s trumpet. Apparently the church was not very happy about this. According to them, Moroni is a registered trademark of the church’s. To make matters worse, the Mormons do not believe in drinking coffee so this use of their angelic symbol really irked them.

If anyone is in the Taylorsville area anytime soon – I’d love if you could pick one of these t-shirts up for me at Just Add Coffee.

Post secret updated today (as they do every sunday) but this week one of the entries hit close to home and in turn my funny bone. I like to imagine one of my friends sent this in (and would not be surprised if that was true)…

Utah got something right

As you may or may not already know, Utah is one of the most conservative states in the nation. In the last presidential election, Bush took a higher percentage of votes in Utah (71% to be exact) than in any other state. A refreshing political change came to Utah in 2000 in the form of a Democratic Mayor named Rocky Anderson. He has done a good many things to help Salt Lake become a more pedestrian and bike friendly city, he has been supportive in equal rights movement for the gay community, he has attempted to bridge the communication gaps between members of “the” faith, and non-members, the city has seen a reduction in serious crime rates under his watch, and he has taken many steps to help revitalize the heart of downtown Salt Lake City, etc., etc.. While all of these things (and many more!) definitely impress me, I found it very moving and extremely brave of him when I read that he called on the people of Salt lake to “vigorously protest” the war in Iraq during President Bush’s visit there last Monday. Good for you Rocky!

In other Utah news, did you hear about the SWAT team making a mess out of a private rave? Reminds me of a time years ago when they sent the SWAT team after the pot smoking hippies at the Sunday drum circle in Liberty Park and a riot nearly ensued. (This last story was also the work of Mayor Andersons, just a gentle reminder that no one is perfect.)
